Forty winks in the middle of the day? Create a ‘nap nook’ and you’re good to go

___

Go ahead. Take a nap. Oh. You’re not a toddler or a senior citizen? What made you think it’s not good for everyone?

Realtor’s Jennifer Kelly Geddes admits some of us feel a tad guilty if we lie down for a rest in the middle of the day. But the physically and mentally restorative practice of napping can help you shed some stress and possibly even increase brain volume, according to Geddes. And she wants to help homeowners find a napping “spot” — called a nap nook — in which to take that snooze.

Fixr remodeling specialist Charlotte Granville says, “A nap nook is a nice addition for those who like to retreat for some uninterrupted time during the day.” But interior designer Peter Spaulding says nap nooks are beneficial for another reason. “It also softens the home, and even though it doesn’t take up many square feet, it can often feel like a whole extra room,” he says.

Both recommend a quiet spot for a nap nook, which means anywhere there’s low foot traffic. Libraries, home offices, guest bedrooms, or even that formal living room that rarely gets occupied are all possible choices.

A simple bench near a desk is one option. But other small areas might include an alcove under a set of steps, a landing where a staircase turns, or one end of a dining room—since meals typically aren’t on the agenda during prime napping hours.

Designer Pamela O’Brien says that drowsiness often follows a few pages of a good book. “A bench between bookshelves is a charming spot where you can nod off with a favorite novel,” she suggests. Book nooks and nap nooks can be synonymous. Window seats are also compatible with naps, but it depends on personal preference. Light is great for reading, but not so great for napping. However, a nap next to a window can be relaxing if you want to feel the sun’s warmth, look out to nice views, or enjoy the sound of rain.

While a bed isn’t required, a soft seat or padding certainly is. “A comfortable chair, chaise, or sofa is ideal,” O’Brien says. “And putting your feet up or reclining in this piece helps, too.” Think a low-slung daybed with a slew of pillows gracing it, or a custom cushion that fits the nook’s length and width.

Speaking of pillows, don’t spare them. Fluffy cushions plus a soft throw blanket will take your nap nook to the coziest level. Choose a cushion cover that can be spot-cleaned or tossed into the washing machine, because you know this spot will be gloriously pet-friendly as well.

“If you cover your padding with one fabric—say, mohair—use the same material for the walls to create strong architecture and a true cocoon,” says another designer with whom Geddes consulted. Other accessories include a bolster for your neck or under the knees, a small table for glasses or a mug of tea, and a basket or attractive hook to store your blanket when it’s not in use.

Light, sound, and temperature are sleep controllers, so aside from a cozy throw, stock your nap nook with an eye mask and earplugs, so you can truly zone out. Blinds or a darkening shade block light, and for noise control, turn on a fan or use a white-noise app. Another idea is to create a nap nook that can be completely closed off by curtains, adding another layer of cozy fun.
