Celebrate gold in your backyard with an outdoor theater

___

There will never be a better time to go all in and turn your backyard into a movie-watching and sporting event oasis than now, when the 2024 Olympic Summer Games are being broadcast from Paris, the City of Lights.

Want to create a gathering space for you and your crew to come together for some gold medal-worthy gymnastics viewing but don’t have an outdoor TV setup? Realtor.com’s Sarah Lyon says not to stress, offering tips on how to perfect a festive TV-watching setup outside without a flatscreen.

You need two things for the basic set-up: a projector and a flat vertical surface. There is indeed something magical about watching a screen under the stars, as is the case in a number of outdoor European movie venues that use the sides of buildings and set up chairs for viewing.

Experts say the biggest consideration when setting up an outdoor theater is lighting, so while it’s worth buying a nicer projector if you plan to watch during the day, you don’t need to worry so much if you’ll only be hosting showings when it’s dark out. If you are planning to watch at night, you can get something for around $100 on Amazon.

Projecting directly on the side of your home is an option, but you’ll get better results if you are using a screen or something that at least has limited color and texture. Sheets? Always an option.

Lyon says determining where to place the projector could take some trial and error — perhaps propping it on a table to get the height required for viewing on the desired surface.

Wallet-friendly, bluetooth-compatible projector rings (around $70) can be used indoors and out. Small and lightweight, they’re also easy to pack up and bring with you on your travels. Pair one with a screen that comes with its own stand and carrier bag, to be found for under $50 with a bit of super-sleuthing online.

Comfortable seating is paramount when hosting a movie night outside. Think beanbag chairs or beach chairs for a great set-up. Wanna get even more creative? Try blow up furniture or pool floats as extra seating. Slide pool floats under yard blankets for cozy seating options, or try blow up pools with pillows and blankets for an outdoor viewing oasis. At the very least provide your fellow viewers with picnic blankets and/or floor pillows for casual lounging.

If you are a true Olympics watcher, why not get into the spirit of the games by setting up your own ‘games’ area with races, obstacle courses, and fun yard games like corn hole, spike ball, ring toss, or badminton, Lyon suggests. Perhaps have your friends dress up in the clothes of their favorite event.

The point of it all is outdoor fun. Don’t forget the food. And citronella candles or electronic zappers to keep the bugs away. Oh. And perhaps some bubbly just in case your favorite country wins gold.
