Indoor DIY projects that can lighten your winter step

___

Oh, the weather outside is frightful but inside your home, it’s so delightful. Cold winter weather doesn’t mean going into hibernation on home projects, according to Realtor.com’s Larissa Runkle. Now that you’ve recovered from the holidays, it’s time to think about doing a few DIY projects around the house.

“While it could be tough to get excited about adding chores to your to-do list, these aren’t the same tedious tasks you’ve been avoiding since last summer,” she says. “Each project on this list is not only incredibly doable—but pretty darn satisfying, too.”

An easy and rewarding project is to reupholster small, worn-down furniture. High-mileage items like ottomans, chair cushions, and that well-loved bench pad in your bay window. Tutorials for this are all over YouTube, so there are no excuses to keep you from at least taking a stab at this. Tackling a smaller piece of furniture can be accomplished quickly and builds confidence for bigger projects.

Been watching a lot of HGTV lately? If so, perhaps you’ve identified a wall in your home that needs something. So how about making it an accent wall with paint or wallpaper? Wood accents are even more interesting, so go back online and find those tutorials if you want to get really creative with wood slats, panels, wainscoting, or framing pieces.

If your kitchen or bathrooms need a refresh, perk them up with a hardware update on cabinets, drawers, and doors. Got a 1990s house that never had any cabinet handles to begin with? Get thee to the big box store and sort through the amazing variety of brushed stainless, gleaming gold, and matte black handles, knobs, and pulls.

Bet you rarely even think about those dusty ceiling fan blades. Deep cleaning things like fan blades can be quite satisfying. A great fan-blade cleaning hack is to grab an old pillowcase and wrap it around each blade. This not only cleans the blade, but it also prevents icky dust clumps from landing on the carpet.

Ever wonder what your living room might look like with the couch in a different corner or with your TV mounted over your fireplace? Winter is the perfect season to shuffle your setup. Rearranging and streamlining furniture costs nothing. A great way to start is to completely empty the room, deep clean it, and then slowly place items back in it, experimenting as you go. Don’t forget that there may be furniture items in other parts of the house that may work there as well.
