Add some practical touches while elevating your holiday style

As holiday lights are being festooned all over neighborhoods now that Turkey Day has passed, the next month will be filled with socializing and parties that take weeks to prep for—along with days of clean-up afterward.

Realtor.com’s Larissa Runkle looked for some holiday hosting hacks (say that fast ten times) to make your life a little bit easier. She rounded up five of her favorite must-haves for hosting holiday parties in maximum style with minimal effort.

The first is a plush pumpkin couch cover. “The best host decor is that which both enhances your space for guests—and preserves it for when they leave,” she says. And ultra-soft winter couch cover is an easy win on both fronts, adding coziness and comfort while protecting your light-colored couch from food and drink spills. Besides, it’s so much easier to throw a blanket in the wash than it is a cushion cover.

Another great hack is a washable rug — among the smartest holiday investments you can make. Washable rugs in a trendy vintage look tie a room together and add softness without breaking the bank. Choose low pile —great for high-traffic areas and makes vacuuming a breeze.

We know the program. You often have to bring more furniture into a given room just to give everyone a place to sit. But do you really want them balancing plates of food on their laps? For large gatherings in tight spaces, try nesting tables — great for small spaces and equally perfect for entertaining when more surface area flexibility is needed.

A roaring fire in the fireplace can be even more enjoyable with the added touch of a firewood organizer — a basket or bucket is a great idea. Look around your fireplace or hearth for ways to both tidy up and style. If you don’t have built-in options, use sturdy baskets and an aluminum pail.

Tree lights are great, but they may not be enough to elegantly light up your living room space. While glaring lights are bad, ambient, dim lights win the day. Runke offers, “And when it comes to affordable mood lighting, there’s nothing we like better than a big ol’ paper lantern.” Layered lighting with a mix of sources to complement your overall room design upgrades your space. An affordable and effective statement piece option is a paper globe — around for years and still current because of how versatile it is.”
