Vodka: the stealth household cleaner

___

It’s not unheard of to take items you store in your home and make cleaning products out of them, such as vinegar or lemons. But what about that bottle of clear libation that reminds you of furry hats, Bloody Marys, and Tchaikovsky?

Vodka is a natural cleaner that is surprisingly effective due to its high alcohol content as well as its lack of smell. So if you have a cheap bottle of vodka that has been collecting dust on a shelf somewhere, Taste of Home’s Erica Young suggests a few other ways to use it without fear of inebriation.

If you combine 1/2 cup of vodka, 1 1/2 cups of water, and about 30 drops of your favorite essential oil in a spray bottle, you can use the concoction to spritz bed linens or other fabrics things need a quick refresh and even use it as a room diffuser.

Make it even simpler for disinfecting a mattress using vodka straight from the bottle. “Remove the sheets, pour a shot or two of vodka into a spray bottle and spray away. This is great to do in the guest room between visits from house guests, or on your own mattress about every three months,” says Young.

Want to shine up those chrome fixtures? Vodka sprayed directly on the fixtures, then buffed with a lint-free towel will have you seeing your own reflection in more than just your bathroom mirror. And of course, because it has solvent qualities, it cleans mirrors and glass without streaking. “To make a quick glass and mirror cleaner, combine in a spray bottle 1 cup of vodka, 1 cup of water and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda,” says Young, who adds that if you spray vodka where you need it most in the shower or tub, let it sit for 20 minutes, and then rinse and dry, you’ll be surprised at the results. Russian stealth at its finest.

How about ridding clothes of that underarm smell? “Fill a spray bottle with 4 parts water to 1 part vodka; spray both sides of the garment’s underarm areas, then let it sit overnight. Then launder as usual,” says Young. You’ll be able to raise your arm to grab a strap on a subway with confidence after that.

Oh. And that brain-skip you did when you left a load of wet laundry overnight only to find it stinking of mildew by the next day? Add 1/2 cup of vodka, then run the washer again. The odor will disappear like Sputnik did before the space race.
