Embrace the change of seasons by changing your home decor

Many Americans may be unaware of it, but in other countries, it’s a ritual for households to make big changes when the seasons turn from summer to fall. They lay down more area rugs, hang seasonal drapery, and even change the decor within their homes to reflect warmth as the colder seasons begin.

USNews & World Report’s Aly J. Yale writes not so much about this ritual, but about decor ideas that take you into the fall season. “Fall is nearly here,” she says. “It’s time for cooler weather, falling leaves, and football — and if you ask interior design professionals, changing up your home’s decor, too.”

Included in ways to change your home’s seasonal aesthetic is bringing in natural products – especially ones you’ve harvested or grown yourself. Pumpkins, potted plants, greens and whites, potato vine, and ferns can last all the way through December.

Because the days will begin to get shorter and natural light will be at more of a premium, it’s a perfect time to change up your lighting – both indoors and out. Bed Bath & Beyond’s Amber Dunford says, “It’s nice to bring in some low lighting to draw people into a space and help it feel cozy. “String lighting can transition well from dusk to night, setting the right ambiance for a gathering space. Lanterns and candles can also be a nice way to bring in a light source.”

And don’t forget the porch. Pair pumpkins on the porch with large open lanterns. And instead of real candles, try solar or battery-operated candles, which offer a lovely flickering candlelight aesthetic, come on automatically, and are heat resistant.

Since summer is all about light and airy fabrics, your decor should reflect that. “As you ease into the cooler seasons, pros say it’s time to bring in a warmer, cozier touch with chunky blankets, layers and heavier fabrics,” says Yale. “Boucle – a type of woven fabric – can be a great choice.” This trend can easily be incorporated through anything from accent pillows to accent chairs.

Layering makes a space cozier particularly as the weather cools. We’re talking rugs, bedding, and throw pillows wherever they exist in your home.

A budget-friendly way to bring fall into your house is to forage from your exterior environment and bring a little nature inside — branches from your garden, cuttings from your trees. Take a “nature walk” and see what speaks to you. “I love clipping branches that are changing colors and putting them into a gorgeous vase,” says one designer Yale interviewed. “Dried hydrangeas and grass are excellent because they bring warm browns into your home and will stay that way forever – all at no expense to you.”

Color-wise, blues and bright whites don’t jive with fall. Instead, add textured fabrics such as throw blankets or pillows in rich colors like brown, red or orange. And focus on natural materials and a neutral color palette with an accent fall color using wood, stone or other organic materials. Then consider painting a featured wall that reflects the colors of fall, such as deep red or orange. This creates a focal point in your room and adds some seasonal color to your space.

Creating a new, nature-inspired centerpiece is one strategy to bring your kitchen into fall. For this, dried flowers can be an option. Low-maintenance floral arrangements are great if you have a garden with any flowers that are seasonal. And once it’s time to give them a trim, pick the flowers of your choice and prepare to dry them. If that’s too much of a hassle, you can purchase already-dried florals from your local florist.

Planning to list your home to sell any time soon? Yale says staging your home with some fall decor may help you do it. “In fact, according to the National Association of Realtors, nearly one in five buyer’s agents say staging increases offers by 6% to 15%. And in the fall, there are many quick and easy ways to stage your property in a seasonal light. Perhaps the simplest is changing up your color scheme.”

Yale goes on to suggest highlighting features like fireplaces, fire pits or cozy reading nooks that might be more of a draw in the cooler months, and embracing the season’s aromas and tastes can be a smart strategy, too. Illinois-based Realtor Sarah Goss says, “Warm tones, fuzzy throw blankets, cinnamon smells and crackling fires will deliver smiles during the fall season. Try staging with mulled cider in the kitchen or a s'mores tray by the fireplace. This will evoke warm fuzzies and images of how life might look like in this home.”
