Scammers abound, and it's easy to become a victim during this coronavirus pandemic from more than the outbreak itself. MotherJones' Matt Cohen reports that some of them are more shameless in their efforts than others, but now they are taking it to a new level: "People are knocking on doors, impersonating Centers for Disease Control and Prevention workers, offering to test people for COVID-19 for money."
While these door-knockers were discovered in New York, the problem doesn't seem to be limited to that location. "Local police departments in Ohio and Florida have received similar reports of a people knocking on doors, dressed in white lab coats, masks, and gloves claiming to be officials from the CDC or the Department of Health and offering to test people for COVID-19 for money," says Cohen. One Florida man says one such scammer came to his door in Boca Raton asking people if they wanted coronavirus tests for $300. The man was ready to call the police immediately and told the scammer he was about to call his doctor to check with him on it. By the time he got back to the door, they were gone.
The scam has even made its way to South Africa, so don't think your doorbell might not ring. There is no door-to-door Coronavirus testing. Call the police if someone visits you offering a test. Testing is being done only at designated sites to restrict movement.
While drive through testing centers are starting to pop up around the country, the best way to be tested is to follow the guidelines provided by the CDC.
