While Christmas can mean everything from Clark Griswold’s holiday lights to Charlie Brown’s tiny Christmas tree, it’s good to know there are some simple things you can do to one room in your house you may not have thought of decorating — your kitchen.
“Because we do so much prep work in our kitchens this time of year, finding upscale decor that doesn’t get in the way of frosting cookies and whipping up feasts can be challenging,” says Realtor.com’s Larissa Runkle, who also says it’s possible to get a little festive in the kitchen without spending a fortune.
Runkle looked around and found five easy, last-minute looks from Instagram that you can use to give your kitchen a dash of holiday magic, the first of which is a DIY doorway garland.
If you live somewhere where you can gather pine branches from your own or a friend’s property, then you can’t go wrong with crafting a DIY door garland. But even if you don’t, Christmas tree lots often sell fresh garland branches. While you usually think of doorway garland outside the front door, DIY expert Vicki Liston says your home’s entryway shouldn’t have all the fun. Use doorway garlands at the entrance to your kitchen, hallways or even to transition from one room to the next.”
How about a bit of elegant holiday decor that will also earn its keep in your kitchen? Find an eye-catching cutting board online or at your local Home Goods in the shape of a tree or a snowman, or simply buy a rectangular cutting board and make the shape yourself. Etsy, however, is one of the best places to look.
Runkle says another easy win when it comes to creating a quick holiday look in your kitchen is to add a cute countertop tree — a quaint way to incorporate multiple trees into your home’s holiday decor without overwhelming your space with several full-sized trees. Decorated or plain, they are a beautiful alternative to flowers or pinecones. Did you know you can get a rosemary tree delivered to your door? What heavenly scent!
Christmas candles can never be overlooked, as there is something about this time of year that begs for more glowing lights. Rather than spending a fortune on candles, however, buy some cute toppers, and opt for tea light candles or votives, which can be purchased for less than a dollar and placed in the corners of your kitchen counters.
Lastly, a perfectly placed bowl of citrus or a winter-style bouquet makes a kitchen feel instantly holiday-ready. ‘Bring in some depth with the soft, warm greenery of winter florals,’ says designer Megan Nelson. “Add a beautiful pop of color with fruit bowls filled to the brim with splashes of color in the form of apples, lemons, and limes. These simple yet natural touches will soften your space and add to the warmth of your kitchen this holiday season.”
